Now, increased demand for traditional fishmeal – which is made from small species caught in the open ocean – has sent the industry scrambling for alternatives.

The stuff being used to make fish feed is a byproduct of the poultry industry – it’s what is left over after the parts of the chicken consumed by humans and the remains used for cat and dog food have been removed.

it depends on who really needs it but for most people using plant based supplements and changing a bit of their food habit is more than enough for the health part.
Just reducing meat intake can have very positive effects.

Also Indian food is really nice because its mostly not centered around meat (its more an additional ingredient) and still very tasty and healthy

You can easily see vegetarians because of how unhealthy they look.

And the average person cant afford the amount of supplements and special food to live as long as a vegan.

I’d rather live healthy and enjoy life.

I catch my own fish and clean them myself and my health and numbers are all In great shape.

I also like having muscle and looking good.

I’ve seen that online and IRL, but to counter, I had a 52-yo vegan gf who ran 5-miles a day, every day, ran marathons when she trained up, closet full of medals. That woman was 5’10" of twisted steel and sex appeal, nothing unhealthy about her.

          ???

Do people actually believe this shit?

Do people think you’ll die if you become vegetarian or vegan? That you’ll rely on supplements? That you can’t get in shape or gain muscle?

Man, people are fucking dumb as shit.

Being vegetarian and getting protein is fucking easy. Being vegan and getting protein is also not really as difficult as people tell you. There are bodybuilders that are fully vegan.

Every vegetarian and vegan I’ve met is healthier on average, and a guy I knew that ate fish he caught died of a parasite, so, like, if we’re going off of anecdotal evidence, there’s also that.

I can tell you that I got into health issues trying to maintain a vegan diet and if I had continued it may have been fatal. This was admittedly in a small town nearly 20 years ago. But the point does stand, in a lot of places it does cost more to have a complete protein every day with plant based diets than with meat based ones. Especially in states that already have agriculture based economies as beef and chicken are largely subsidized. I ended up developing a sensitivity to soy that has thankfully since gone away with a more balanced diet but that made it basically impossible to continue with the options that were available to me at that time within my price range.

I’m not saying that my experience was the norm, but dismissing that time, cost, and location are factors is definitely unwarranted in this case.

Context matters, going pure vegetarian and heaven help you vegan. With our access to proper replacement can and will kill you.

For 99% of people that do go vegetarian or vegan don’t have that problem tho. Because they DO have access. So for them it’s literally a non issue and perfectly fine and healthy.

and by anecdotal evidence wise basically every vegan I’ve ever met has a laundry list of health issues from their diet choice.

Rarely meet an unhealthy vegetarian tho.

The real ones that always seem to be in God tier health are the pescatarians. Those fuckers have shit figured out.

You are just objectively less healthy if you don’t have a well rounded diet that includes lean meat.

            Period. The science is there…

You shouldn’t eat lots of meat but some is very beneficial

The science says that a little bit of meat is fine, just like a little bit of anything is fine. It doesn’t say that no meat is less healthy, and usually says that no meat is, in fact, healthier. I’d even guess that whatever amount you eat is more than the amount that is recommended, especially if you are bragging about eating fish you caught. You could easily get mercury poisoning that way. See that concern trolling?

We’re fucking omnivores. That means we can survive eating just about anything. You think we have to eat meat to live?

No, I’m suggesting there aren’t many because not every one can tolerate it long term. Those I’ve know who can, were raised that way from infancy. But it seems our bodies, once adapted to animal protein, make it quite difficult for us to stop. Not impossible, just difficult.

Do you have any evidence of any of that?

I lived most of my life eating meat with every meal, stopped eating meat suddenly and got used to it in what, maybe a month?

I think that you have it backwards, it’s not that you need to be raised vegetarian for it to be easy, it’s just that people are so brainwashed thinking that meat is life that they just can’t escape it without a conscious effort.

That’s great for you. Again I never said it was everyone. But a portion of people who try, sometimes a few years later, they find that they have low energy, muscle mass and strength loss. Especially athletes and extremely fit people. Sometimes women notice similar problems when pregnant, and they have to eat meat until they give birth, then give it up again.

Vegetarians and vegans frequently claim it’s always great for everyone, and the few drawbacks are just people not doing it right. But that isn’t always the case.

Yeah, you need to take into account nutrients and the amount of protein you have. But you also need that if you’re eating meat, earlier I was reading that like 5% americans have enough fibers, people simply don’t care about what they est and that’s the problem. But I’d take low energy as a warning sign, above cancer.

Nutrition is something that you need to think about. And yeah, people don’t do it right most of the time.

Nutrition is something that you need to think about. And yeah, people don’t do it right most of the time.

That’s the thing though, you have to devote way more time and energy to designing a balanced diet. And even then, depending on where you live, it can take even more time and effort to actually find the food you need. Outside more urban areas, vegetarian-friendly restaurants and markets can be scarce. Your nutritional considerations become a major part of your life, and most people just don’t have time for that.

But that’s not the only thing, there’s the social aspect. Eating is very frequently a social activity. Cutting out meat makes it much more difficult to engage in communal meals, be it restaurants or potlucks. On top of difficulty in finding good options, there’s the unspoken tension that being a vegetarian around people actively eating meat creates, especially in meat-centric contexts like barbecues or Thanksgiving dinner. The social difficulties can make it too alienating a prospect for most people.

I get it, but it’s just not rational to expect the majority of people to cut out meat. I’ve tried.

It’s really a Hindu, rather than a specifically Indian, thing. But India is majority Hindu, so.

Hinduism encourages vegetarianism, and it is considered more moral than eating meat since you aren’t killing an animal. However, only Brahmins are required to be vegetarian; other castes can eat non-cow meat if they like, though refraining from doing so is considered better. Since the Brahmins are the highest caste, vegetarianism is a conservative position in India, while the woke SJWs defend religious minorities’ traditions of eating meat.

But, as has been said, this all means that India has a higher than average proportion of vegetarians, and even the lower-caste vegetarians are no less healthy than foreigners of comparable social class.

There are also degrees of vegetarianism. A former housemate of mine is a vegetarian for religious reasons, but he didn’t mind eating a cupcake I’d made which he didn’t realise had egg in it.

One of my current housemates eats meat but his dad is a Brahmin, and said dad can’t even eat vegetarian food that was prepared in cookware which had meat in it at some point. To cater to the really strict Brahmins, there are “double vegetarian” restaurants, where all the food is meat-free and the staff are all vegetarians.

Indians recognise the word vegan because of English hegemony, but they don’t use it themselves. They refer to such people as “true vegetarians”; I think the Jains fall here.

The gut bacteria thing might make sense, but a lot of people transition. They would then have the new biome. Extra farting and all.

I think it’s a culture issue, as in the culture teaching you what works and what does not, etc. in terms of eating habits and recipes. Maybe once a robust culture forms around eating vegetarian food where you live, then maybe all the doubts might go away.

I don’t know, it’s an educated guess. I know they aren’t richer in India, and they are doing fine.

I’m not talking about doubts. I’m talking about a group of people who have done it for years, and at some point noticed problems. They go to the doctor and find deficiencies in their bloodwork. Then go to a nutritionist to try to correct for it. Eventually they try eating fish or something for a few days and see improvement, seemingly overnight. They then have meat meals once or twice a week, and do fine on that.

Certainly we eat far more meat than we need, and the vast majority of us should cut back. But the insistence that meat should be or even could be, entirely eliminated from everyone’s diet today if we all decided to, is just wrong. But if everyone cut back, even to half, perhaps the awful industrial farming conditions could be improved. That would also take some economic policy changes to make happen, but maybe.

They suffer malnutrition often. Unless they are extremely wealthy.

For the masses to be healthy we need meat. It’s the way it is.

Your datum for this claim is your bank account for that claim? Wut? Are you implying you’re a vegetarian?

As of today in the UK (as an example)

                    Beef: 9.11 GBP / kg (at ~ 23g protein/100g raw beef) is 3.96 GBP /100g protein.
                    Tofu: 1.80 GBP/ 450g (at ~ 16g protein/100g tofu) is 2.50 GBP /100 protein.
So how exactly is meat cheaper?
