Now, increased demand for traditional fishmeal – which is made from small species caught in the open ocean – has sent the industry scrambling for alternatives.

The stuff being used to make fish feed is a byproduct of the poultry industry – it’s what is left over after the parts of the chicken consumed by humans and the remains used for cat and dog food have been removed.

So it’s not that we grow chicken to feed it to salmon, we use the leftovers that would otherwise go to waste. This is good!

Granted, of course, that sanitary standards are followed. In the EU, I don’t expect it to be a problem.

Seriously it’s in the body of text in the post. Leftovers of the chickens that cannt be used for humans dogs and cats get used for the fish.

This is like people arguing against leather at this point when millions of animals are being slaughtered and their hides are being thrown into landfills because demand is so low. If they are already slaughtering the animals, use the parts. As demand for cows/chickens comes down find alternatives, but throwing away parts of a slaughtered animal is worse to me.

I’ve seen a documentary a while back that the fish feed from the baltic sea used for fish farms is pretty toxic.

All fish are contaminated with some kind of pollution. One of my lab mates in grad school did a study that showed there is no region of the oceans where caught fish do not have statistically significant levels of BPAs.

This is why they tell you to not eat salmon or tuna more than once a week.

Sorry I think I misunderstood the comment I replied to a little. But basically even in the EU anyone should prefer salmon that is fed chickenmeal or poultrymeal instead of fishmeal, because the contamination accumulates. And the baltic where a lot of the fishmeal came from (or at least used to come from) is especially toxic. But that is also getting better.

I think the best kind to do fish farms would be to develop systems where you grow your own protein rich algae in the ocean using sunlight and some fertilizer in big floating basins, and then feed the algae to (filter) fish. Then you can fully control it and are not dependent on waste. If we could scale up and automate that kind of aquaculture farming it would solve a lot of problems for protein food supply and overfishing. Because you could do it anywhere, and the oceans are basically lifeless deserts otherwise.

Y’all, a lot of farm raised tilapia is fed chicken manure or pellets made with manure. Look up some Aquaculture setups where chickens poop into a pond to feed fish, the fish feed water to fertilize plants.

Typically, pathogens don’t jump and survive between species like this. This is a zero percent news item other than “why use inefficient chickens for the protein input?” Black soldier fly large eating compost and food waste should be the go-to option.

If we ever get invaded by aliens, they are gonna laugh their asses off.

So why don’t you eat food you grow

See, it’s really smart actually. We feed it to the chicken, then we feed the chicken to the salmon and then ww throw away most of it, but we eat some of it.

    Your planet is dying.

Is that surprising? At all? It’s literally in our nature.

I mean, no offense but I will continue to do what I can to be able to eat meat, it makes my life better.

I’m all for synthetic meats, or lab grown meats, as those become available. If there are more sustainable options, great. (As long as it tastes like meat)

The nature of humans is absolutely not to eat meat everyday.

If anything, it’s much more natural for humans to go without meat, than to eat meat everyday.

Also cancer is rarely making your life better.

It is the nature of humans to crave meat, we enjoy it. That’s the real issue. There is a very real quality of life benefit it provides to us. Maybe you don’t need that, and if so, that’s great for you. But because it really does make life better for so many people, you’re not going to see the majority of humans giving up meat any time soon. That’s the reality.

You know, one could measure the “evolutionary success” of a species by how much they are able to reproduce and pass on their genes to another generation. So the species with the highest population, or greatest biomass (either way you want to measure) could be called the most successful. By that metric the chicken would be the most evolutionarily successful bird in the world. Food for thought. 😜

it depends on who really needs it but for most people using plant based supplements and changing a bit of their food habit is more than enough for the health part.
Just reducing meat intake can have very positive effects.

Also Indian food is really nice because its mostly not centered around meat (its more an additional ingredient) and still very tasty and healthy

You can easily see vegetarians because of how unhealthy they look.

And the average person cant afford the amount of supplements and special food to live as long as a vegan.

I’d rather live healthy and enjoy life.

I catch my own fish and clean them myself and my health and numbers are all In great shape.

I also like having muscle and looking good.

Do people actually believe this shit?

Do people think you’ll die if you become vegetarian or vegan? That you’ll rely on supplements? That you can’t get in shape or gain muscle?

Man, people are fucking dumb as shit.

Being vegetarian and getting protein is fucking easy. Being vegan and getting protein is also not really as difficult as people tell you. There are bodybuilders that are fully vegan.

Every vegetarian and vegan I’ve met is healthier on average, and a guy I knew that ate fish he caught died of a parasite, so, like, if we’re going off of anecdotal evidence, there’s also that.

I can tell you that I got into health issues trying to maintain a vegan diet and if I had continued it may have been fatal. This was admittedly in a small town nearly 20 years ago. But the point does stand, in a lot of places it does cost more to have a complete protein every day with plant based diets than with meat based ones. Especially in states that already have agriculture based economies as beef and chicken are largely subsidized. I ended up developing a sensitivity to soy that has thankfully since gone away with a more balanced diet but that made it basically impossible to continue with the options that were available to me at that time within my price range.

I’m not saying that my experience was the norm, but dismissing that time, cost, and location are factors is definitely unwarranted in this case.

Context matters, going pure vegetarian and heaven help you vegan. With our access to proper replacement can and will kill you.

For 99% of people that do go vegetarian or vegan don’t have that problem tho. Because they DO have access. So for them it’s literally a non issue and perfectly fine and healthy.

and by anecdotal evidence wise basically every vegan I’ve ever met has a laundry list of health issues from their diet choice.

Rarely meet an unhealthy vegetarian tho.

The science says that a little bit of meat is fine, just like a little bit of anything is fine. It doesn’t say that no meat is less healthy, and usually says that no meat is, in fact, healthier. I’d even guess that whatever amount you eat is more than the amount that is recommended, especially if you are bragging about eating fish you caught. You could easily get mercury poisoning that way. See that concern trolling?

We’re fucking omnivores. That means we can survive eating just about anything. You think we have to eat meat to live?

No, I’m suggesting there aren’t many because not every one can tolerate it long term. Those I’ve know who can, were raised that way from infancy. But it seems our bodies, once adapted to animal protein, make it quite difficult for us to stop. Not impossible, just difficult.

I think that you have it backwards, it’s not that you need to be raised vegetarian for it to be easy, it’s just that people are so brainwashed thinking that meat is life that they just can’t escape it without a conscious effort.

That’s great for you. Again I never said it was everyone. But a portion of people who try, sometimes a few years later, they find that they have low energy, muscle mass and strength loss. Especially athletes and extremely fit people. Sometimes women notice similar problems when pregnant, and they have to eat meat until they give birth, then give it up again.

Vegetarians and vegans frequently claim it’s always great for everyone, and the few drawbacks are just people not doing it right. But that isn’t always the case.

Hinduism encourages vegetarianism, and it is considered more moral than eating meat since you aren’t killing an animal. However, only Brahmins are required to be vegetarian; other castes can eat non-cow meat if they like, though refraining from doing so is considered better. Since the Brahmins are the highest caste, vegetarianism is a conservative position in India, while the woke SJWs defend religious minorities’ traditions of eating meat.

But, as has been said, this all means that India has a higher than average proportion of vegetarians, and even the lower-caste vegetarians are no less healthy than foreigners of comparable social class.

There are also degrees of vegetarianism. A former housemate of mine is a vegetarian for religious reasons, but he didn’t mind eating a cupcake I’d made which he didn’t realise had egg in it.

One of my current housemates eats meat but his dad is a Brahmin, and said dad can’t even eat vegetarian food that was prepared in cookware which had meat in it at some point. To cater to the really strict Brahmins, there are “double vegetarian” restaurants, where all the food is meat-free and the staff are all vegetarians.

Indians recognise the word vegan because of English hegemony, but they don’t use it themselves. They refer to such people as “true vegetarians”; I think the Jains fall here.

Isn’t that more a case of low income and low access to health care? Loads of countries in that income bracket that have similar life expectancy while eating meat.

Was this an actual attempt at discussion or drive by lol trolling?

Yes. As I said in another comment, people raised without animal meet tend to do fine. Most others have a difficult time.

They suffer malnutrition often. Unless they are extremely wealthy.

For the masses to be healthy we need meat. It’s the way it is.

What if we make them eat the grasshoppers instead of us?
