Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley issued a heartfelt plea to Canadian visitors this week, acknowledging the city’s tourism-dependent economy is suffering from a dramatic decline in international visitors, particularly from Canada, which represents the city’s largest international market.

“As the mayor of Las Vegas, I’m telling everybody in Canada, please come. We love you, we need you, and we miss you,” Berkley said during a press conference this week, where she addressed the multiple challenges facing the entertainment capital’s tourism industry.

The mayor’s latest comments echo concerns she first raised in an August press conference, where she painted a stark picture of the tourism decline.

“International travel is way down. People are not coming to the United States,” Berkley said last month. “’

Great yet ?

I guess international travelers don’t like being assaulted by Trump’s Gestapo and disappeared into a gulag. Who knew?

We know why and the majority of us are depressed about it. But yeah, do not come here until the US remembers that we’re part of a global community. We’re not gonna get better without some hardship first.

Yah this doesn’t belong here. Berkley never supported trump. Clark County was narrowly won by Harris. I hate MAGA too, but I don’t see how dunking on the collateral damage is helpful.

Edit: and by “collateral damage” I mean the innocent people who get harmed by the actions of the trump voters, not the direct consequences of the trump voters’ actions, which absolutely should be dunked on, early and often.

Because it’s fun, and maybe if enough places see the harm Cheeto Mussolini is doing they will actually do something instead of begging tourists to ignore fascism.

That’s fair, and I’m not saying that Canadians should resume travel to Las Vegas, but it’s still not the very specific phenomenon of someone voting for the Face-Eating Leopard Party expressing surprise that the leopards would eat their face. Maybe I’m too literal.

I just think face-eating leopard type criticism should be confined to individuals who actually brought this horror upon themselves, and not to make fun of entire regions that get caught up in the backlash.

If the strip is so desperate for business, then where are the $35/night rooms?

Was going to go with the girlfriend last month, but after seeing the room prices, we decided to save a ton of money and go to San Diego instead.

If you want people to go to the strip again, bring back the deals you used to run all the time before COVID. Otherwise I don’t believe you when you say you’re desperate for tourists.

great link, and good reason for everyone to stay away.

Canada is extra special though. As airport TSA were assholes before Trump, and there are some new ICE/border horror stories with white Canadians, in addition to the general view that US is a dislikable shithole country now, over unfair tariff extortion.

Yes, it’s a conservative shithole. Pretty much all of Nevada is. I noticed when I went to work conferences there that there seemed to be more conservative events happening compared to how it was 15 years ago.

Vegas effectively priced out middle class/poor families out of a budget friendly vacation. Now it’s just rich people, poor people acting rich, and employees attending conferences now. As an American minority, Vegas isn’t a safe place to visit anymore. They want my money but not see me there.

NV was slightly blue in previous 3 elections, or at least very close. It was close again, but the “no taxes on tips” bribe made Trump win, and the bribe was only made to win NV. LV tip earners total after tax earnings are probably down now.

I’m born and raised in Nevada north eastern Nevada to be exact and seeing this state and Vegas solely descend into the cesspit that it has created I couldn’t be happier. It does suck for the workers in the hotels and the people that drive taxis and work in food services throughout state they are going to be the first ones to suffer from this.
