remember in america, the ones who administer lethal injections are as a rule incompetent.
you may think i am being hatefull to executioners, but it’s more complicated then that. if you are medically trained you say an oath to do no harm, doing so anyway will cost you your medical license. so the one who prepares and administers the injection is not medically trained.
also the chemicals are not produced in or by medically licensed pharmaceutical companies. and raw chemicals that are legally allowed to be used are not allowed to be sold to the prisons who do lethal injections. so they have to order from ilreputable sources, who are also incompetent. you may remember the big discussion over some states voting on being allowed to chance what chemicals can be used to kill people.
so it’s not unheard of for people to survive their execution, and why they recover at the hospital after. the executioner is a moraless incompetent who is back yard mixing cut chemicals with an aura of legitimacy as paper thin as his credentials.
Meanwhile we’ve got entire hardware stores full of sledge hammers.
She’s the 0.1% of germs exposed to lysol
I read this book, Reincarnation Blues, where this society rehabs people by hugging them and reminding them of how to be a good person. Seems better than lethal injection
I would kill so many more people.
24th Century Social Scientist: Class, what we have here is a perfect example of humanas aggresitoris. People of this time period were so indoctrinated into death and destruction that even a mention of a hug results in a death threat.
Fuck that guy, and you know he’s a guy because he doesn’t respect consent even in the 24th century.
You definitely made me chuckle, thanks.
“I need a hug today.”
“Oh yeah? Prove it.”
For those wondering:
A botched execution doesn’t invalidate the underlying conviction, and a death warrant orders a completed execution, not a finite number of tries. She’s still in custody and technically still subject to another attemt.
If I were her attorney I’d push to have her sentence commuted to life without parole, citing that her physical condition makes lethal injection extremely difficult, and that what’s she’s been put through constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.
Speaking personally, in a civilized society, we’d be as horrified at what’s been done to her as we are at what she actually did. Don’t care to argue with anyone about that, that’s just how I see it.
Speaking personally, in a civilized society, we’d be as horrified at what’s been done to her as we are at what she actually did.
I am even more horrified about what’s been (and being) done to her, because it is coming from an allegedly “sane” group of people, whereas she was clearly a victim of insane abuse herself, not only that but also with actual organ damage from what I read about her case - I think substance abuse of her mother during pregnancy, and being a toddler in a room full of dog poo?
Occasionally, in this sadistic, cruel world, people snap. Sometimes even without having been victims of abuse themselves. Some are born psychopaths (but even then: is there a meaningful interpretation of “evil” in the sense that these people chose to be violent? Or does the problem start when their mind is in a place where effecting violence on others is even an option?).
But for a society to enact corporal punishment, it has to be truly barbaric and utterly depraved. Not to mention the torture leading up to that, with solitary confinement and decades of a literal blade hanging over your head.
Protect society from violent criminals, by all means, lock them up if that’s needed. But don’t expose them to cruelty. That is never going to make anyone a better person, it only turns those committing the cruelty into psychopaths. Also, regular inmates with lifelong sentences are cheaper to society than those on death row.
None of the cruelty brings her victim back to life. But the cruelty committed against the murderer may cause the next cruel and violent murderer from among the children of the tormentors of death row inmates, some of whom will suffer abuse by their psychopathic parent.
Truly the ones who deserve the death penalty the most are the billionaire Epstein-“Elites”.
Every single one of them is directly responsible for more death and harm than any serial killer.
Not to mention the downstream effects of wealth hording, which is of course poverty, and everything that stems from that…particularly, criminal behavior.
Oh and then they use their power and influence to pit us against each other. They literally are “the algorithm”, at this point.
No, you see, the reason you’re struggling isn’t because this guy is rich, it’s because of these other people who look different than you and are struggling even more. They’re the ones to be mad at!
Ugh.
As much as I agree with the sentiment, I am generally opposed to corporal punishment. Do they deserve a good beating? Sure. Should the state have the power to hurt people (other than in situations of immediate danger to others)? No. Absolutely not.
Don’t care to argue with anyone
Sir, this is the internet
If I were her attorney I’d push to have her sentence commuted to life without parol …
That’s exactly what her attorney is asking for.
Smart guy. He clearly read my comment. 🧐
A botched execution doesn’t invalidate the underlying conviction, and a death warrant orders a completed execution, not a finite number of tries.
So Margaret Atwood lied to me?
I still say we need to bring back banishment. Negotiate with Canada to let America use Baffin Island as like a new Australia, but way, way colder.
LOL no. Canada doesn’t want Americans, especially your criminals
I wonder how that would work, IRL.
Like, the penalty for some crime is…you disappear. That’s it. Like, you cease to exist. Everything you own is liquidated, you’re given the money in some random currency and your identity is shredded. You’re a new person dropped in a new country with just cash and a new passport that says you can’t come back.
That’s gotta be the premise to some book or movie or something right? Like Eraser meets Skyrim?
It’d probably work like it did in Australia.
Why not just give them to ICE? ICE loves vanishing people to random countries where they’ll probably die anyway. /s
After reading the news about Christa Pike, I found an article on Wikipedia listing a bunch of botched executions.
Since 2000, 5% of lethal injections have gone wrong in one way or another. That’s 17 botched injections in 26 years. That’s an unreasonably high failure rate for something that they have no intention of stopping.
I had an assignment once related to the death penalty when i was in high school. I remember reading that lethal injection had the highest botch rate. Don’t remember what the least was, but I want to say it was hanging? Either way, it’s unreasonable to do anyway. Costs significantly more than life in prison.
How don’t they have a backup method? There must be someone around with a gun? Double tap just in case, even if the chemical method seems to work.
If you must execute people, at least have the decency to do it properly.
IMHO the entire injection procedure is to keep it “clean” and socially accepted. Very few people would be happy to see somebody being shot in the head, but seeing somebody “falling asleep” is much more “ok”. It looks less violent even though the end result is the same. Surviving a lethal injection and waking up again in that nightmare must be horrible.
The reality is that death penalty is cruel and more costly than keeping someone in prison for life, and this doesn’t even consider the human cost of executing an innocent. It just doesn’t make sense.
Agreed.
Dying slowly from an injection (or not at all) is more cruel that a bullet to the brain. You are right that these injections are done because observers don’t have the stomach for an bullet to the head. But if you don’t have the stomach to carry out the sentence, then you shouldn’t be meting out that sentence.
Never heard a complaint from the guillotine. That thing can chop all day every day for weeks. The French had a go at maxing it out. Didn’t even brake a sweat.
And she’s now at the hospital where they are trying to keep her alive. Like can’t they decide? Do you want her to die or not?
The hospital staff are obligated to keep her alive. They won’t take part in the execution by letting her die.
Most lethal injections aren’t administered by doctors because it would violate the Hippocratic oath, and in some places can get their medical license revoked.
So she’s going to bounce back and forth between the people trying to kill her and the people trying to keep her alive, because that’s how our system is designed and it doesn’t offer a better alternative to this situation…
I dunno. She received the full punishment. It just didn’t take.
Full sentence is death. She ain’t dead.
Can she claim she served her sentence, and they should release her?
No
They also didn’t tell the hospital when they brought her in.
How do you fuck up an execution? It’s really not that hard to kill a person. Just ask her.
I heard in a podcast that she suffers from a blood disease which could affect the lethal injection. She and her lawyers have repeatedly tried to request that the death penalty be carried out by hanging or firing squad instead, but this was rejected by the judges.
Wow wtf. So a reasonable judge could’ve prevented this but they were too focused on sanitizing the image of what they’re calling “justice”. If they hung or shot her it would look as brutal as it is. But if you make someone “sleep forever” that’s not terrible right? Or at least that is their thinking.
Non medical people making execution drugs because medical professionals took an oath to do no harm
I mean… Still, it’s not hard to put something in someone that would kill them. Pretty sure you can get non medical arsenic or cyanide or something. Honestly, I’m kinda against the death penalty in general, but if it’s going to happen, they should fucking do it right. I’d much rather get shot than injected
They could just do the fentanyl that’s killing all the addicts so regularly. IV push 1000mg of fentanyl, that’d kill a blue whale.
From what I remember, death penalty drug need to be approved to be “painless” (gag+sarcasm), so there are very few legal options and fewer yet being still produced.
Straight up medival torture
Worse, arguably. In medieval times they wouldn’t (be able to) save them from the brink of death only to execute them when they have recovered.
The murder sounds like a satanic panic story. She was carrying around a piece of skull afterwards. The boy pled and got life +25 while she fought it and originally got the death by chair. Personally, while I’m morally ok with just being done with certain people, the death penalty in the US is too screwed up to keep. This one definitely was a good candidate for it and needs to not get back into society, however that works.
Personal opinion. I do not agree with the death penalty. Also a personal opinion, if the death penalty is applied, it cannot be barbaric and inhuman. Personal self-awareness. If a loved one was harmed horribly,… this is why we have a jury of our peers. No person could be unbiased.
They should just let her free at this point. She won.
How TF did they screw that up TWICE?!
Of course the state is being withholding on details, but there’s a few things that could have happened, possibly simultaneously (Note: my source is listening to NPR):
- The injections took an awfully long time compared to normal. The medical staff performing the injections have been accused of not being properly trained/qualified. Perhaps not all of it was actually injected into the veins? Witnesses reported that she was singing after the first injection.
- The older, more reliable sources of the drug used (phenolbarbital) now refuse to sell it to Tennessee prisons. The source of the drug may have been unreliable. Perhaps it wasn’t as potent as advertised.
- The drug can apparently expire/get old, reducing the efficacy to some degree. There is no guarantee they had a fresh supply.
It’s worth noting that as of yesterday, she was reported as being on a ventilator at the hospital.
Also I just wanna add that the wrestling character in the picture is (I believe) The Undertaker. The actor is now the mayor of Knoxville, Tennessee. This is a very Tennessee post.
I had to look it up, Kane was the mayor of Knox county, TN, not the undertaker. (Wikipedia, Knoxville TN website)
I had to look it up, Kane was the mayor of Knox county, TN, not the undertaker.
In July 2020, Jacobs was the only member of the Knox County Board of Health to vote against a mask mandate for those inside certain buildings
You’d think he’d be pro mask…
You’re right. I always get them confused.
Well, they are brothers.
The medical staff performing the injections have been accused of not being properly trained/qualified
They’re not actually medical professionals right? I think the hippocratic oath basically prevents actual doctors and medical professionals from taking that job, so it’s essentially non-medical staff performing the injections.
I think the hippocratic oath basically prevents actual doctors and medical professionals from taking that job
if you think doctors treat the hippocratic oath as more than words on paper i have a bridge to sell you.
No, but as the OP replied to me, at least some of them are calling for it.
Apparently they are qualified medical professionals. Doctors and nurses are writing to the state asking them to not involve medical professionals in the process.
I heard (also on NPR) that she has a rare vein condition which makes it incredibly difficult to administer anything by IV.
From what I understand, she has some sort of blood disorder that can interfere with the chemicals. They were told this by her lawyers and went through with it anyway. Twice. And she survived. Both times. So yeah. That’s fun.
she’s got two lethal doses of the drug in her body now. if she recovers it’s going to be slow and painful…
wait til future serial killers realize you can become immune to lethal injections
And all you have to do is contract a rare blood disorder that might be highly detrimental to your health and might not even be transmissible! Easy!
Thats so fucked up. Does she walk free after this? They already handed out the punishment twice.
Lol, who am I kidding. I know how the US legal system works
She tortured a person to death, so I don’t think so
She was 19. Had been abused herself, and had fetal alchohol poisoning. If she’d had spent the last 30 years being rehabilitated, she’d be a very different person from that fucked up 19-yo.
The sentence is death, not poked with a needle. The system got this one right up to that point, it wasn’t a complicated case. The system could still do better and needs to change, but she really doesn’t need to be the one who goes free because of that.
The request from her lawyers is to commute the sentence. So no.
One would have thought that we would have some kind of automated procedure to add a lot more waiting time and re-asses the form of execution if not life sentence based on doctors, not judges, instead but I guess not.
Doctors don’t want to be involved with the death penalty. I goes against their whole saving lives thing.
States have been trying for a few decades so at least the medical profession has learned from history.
That is surprising in a good way
Reverend Mother Pike.
Well the Guillotine never failed
