Now, increased demand for traditional fishmeal – which is made from small species caught in the open ocean – has sent the industry scrambling for alternatives.
The stuff being used to make fish feed is a byproduct of the poultry industry – it’s what is left over after the parts of the chicken consumed by humans and the remains used for cat and dog food have been removed.

People are ready to do anything, but stop eating meat.
We have become obsessed with protein pushed by the beef industry in response to the increasing recognition that we are eating too much (cardiovascular disease, bowel cancer risks, etc)
Is that surprising? At all? It’s literally in our nature.
I mean, no offense but I will continue to do what I can to be able to eat meat, it makes my life better.
I’m all for synthetic meats, or lab grown meats, as those become available. If there are more sustainable options, great. (As long as it tastes like meat)
The nature of humans is absolutely not to eat meat everyday.
If anything, it’s much more natural for humans to go without meat, than to eat meat everyday.
Also cancer is rarely making your life better.
It is the nature of humans to crave meat, we enjoy it. That’s the real issue. There is a very real quality of life benefit it provides to us. Maybe you don’t need that, and if so, that’s great for you. But because it really does make life better for so many people, you’re not going to see the majority of humans giving up meat any time soon. That’s the reality.
Nah dude, I love the taste of meat but I am 99% vegetarian since 2012 or so and we absolutely don’t “crave” meat. That’s a learned habit. Find enjoyable vegetarian meals and you will eat less and less meat.
Hey, I lived mostly vegetarian for several years as well, I get it. It’s totally doable, you do sort of get used to it. But when I stopped cooking for vegetarians, I went back to eating meat, and it was a relief.
Not for the livestock, it wasn’t. :p
You know, one could measure the “evolutionary success” of a species by how much they are able to reproduce and pass on their genes to another generation. So the species with the highest population, or greatest biomass (either way you want to measure) could be called the most successful. By that metric the chicken would be the most evolutionarily successful bird in the world. Food for thought. 😜
Defining the suffering of animals in a way that suits my objectives is not food for thought. Don’t get me wrong, eating animals (and humans as mammals are legitimate food for other animals, too) is natural, it’s how this planet works.
But that doesn’t justify factory farming in the way it causes inconceivable amounts of suffering, and since mankind has advanced enough to produce quite good alternatives, I consider myself lucky to be able to eat meat-like tasting things without animals having to suffer for it. Also, some oat milks are great tasting, arguably better than cow milk for some purposes (coffee). And I say that as someone who drank 1-2 litres of milk per day for a decade.
All I expect of humans is to make a conscious decision to only eat meat when they really feel like eating meat, and not just because “you have to eat something”. That’s what I have been doing for ~15 years and my meat consumption has gone to almost none by now, where I will occasionally enjoy a steak anyways.

Correct, because it’s essential to our diet and the best tasting things we have available.
it depends on who really needs it but for most people using plant based supplements and changing a bit of their food habit is more than enough for the health part.
Just reducing meat intake can have very positive effects.
Also Indian food is really nice because its mostly not centered around meat (its more an additional ingredient) and still very tasty and healthy
You can easily see vegetarians because of how unhealthy they look.
And the average person cant afford the amount of supplements and special food to live as long as a vegan.
I’d rather live healthy and enjoy life.
I catch my own fish and clean them myself and my health and numbers are all In great shape.
I also like having muscle and looking good.
How much does the truth hurt?
I’ve seen that online and IRL, but to counter, I had a 52-yo vegan gf who ran 5-miles a day, every day, ran marathons when she trained up, closet full of medals. That woman was 5’10" of twisted steel and sex appeal, nothing unhealthy about her.
Album name right there.

She was nothing but muscle, and not the cadaverous thing some vegans end up as. Nothing unhealthy in her appearance, no supplements in her diet, which you claim will be necessary.
Oh wait. Goalposts moved. NM.
???
Do people actually believe this shit?
Do people think you’ll die if you become vegetarian or vegan? That you’ll rely on supplements? That you can’t get in shape or gain muscle?
Man, people are fucking dumb as shit.
Being vegetarian and getting protein is fucking easy. Being vegan and getting protein is also not really as difficult as people tell you. There are bodybuilders that are fully vegan.
Every vegetarian and vegan I’ve met is healthier on average, and a guy I knew that ate fish he caught died of a parasite, so, like, if we’re going off of anecdotal evidence, there’s also that.
I can tell you that I got into health issues trying to maintain a vegan diet and if I had continued it may have been fatal. This was admittedly in a small town nearly 20 years ago. But the point does stand, in a lot of places it does cost more to have a complete protein every day with plant based diets than with meat based ones. Especially in states that already have agriculture based economies as beef and chicken are largely subsidized. I ended up developing a sensitivity to soy that has thankfully since gone away with a more balanced diet but that made it basically impossible to continue with the options that were available to me at that time within my price range.
I’m not saying that my experience was the norm, but dismissing that time, cost, and location are factors is definitely unwarranted in this case.
Context matters, going pure vegetarian and heaven help you vegan. With our access to proper replacement can and will kill you.
For 99% of people that do go vegetarian or vegan don’t have that problem tho. Because they DO have access. So for them it’s literally a non issue and perfectly fine and healthy.
and by anecdotal evidence wise basically every vegan I’ve ever met has a laundry list of health issues from their diet choice.
Rarely meet an unhealthy vegetarian tho.
The real ones that always seem to be in God tier health are the pescatarians. Those fuckers have shit figured out.
You are just objectively less healthy if you don’t have a well rounded diet that includes lean meat.
Period. The science is there…
You shouldn’t eat lots of meat but some is very beneficial
The science says that a little bit of meat is fine, just like a little bit of anything is fine. It doesn’t say that no meat is less healthy, and usually says that no meat is, in fact, healthier. I’d even guess that whatever amount you eat is more than the amount that is recommended, especially if you are bragging about eating fish you caught. You could easily get mercury poisoning that way. See that concern trolling?
We’re fucking omnivores. That means we can survive eating just about anything. You think we have to eat meat to live?
The guy your arguing with’s name is “Truth_Hurts” and their account was created like 2 weeks ago. All of their recent comment history is arguments, they even have a ton of comments that were removed by a mod I think. Just give it a rest with that guy, they clearly won’t even back up their claims with the bullshit they’re spewing.
It’s not him I’m arguing for. It’s everyone else that might not realize how fucking dumb he is and needs someone to call him out.

So, uh, what about my ex-gf vegan marathon runner? Can you run 5 miles a day, every single day?
I know anecdotes aren’t evidence, but if you want to come off like, “this is a universal truth”, then I can rebut that.
90% of India looking at you like you’re an idiot because of what you just said.
Oh, no. You won’t Poe me. No one is actually this stupid.

Yes, that’s why vegetarians don’t exist.
Very smart take, very scientific, shows great intelligence.
It is why their numbers are so small.
And why some of them have to go back to eating meat after a time.
You’re seriously suggesting that there’s not a lot of vegetarians because they die or go back to eating meat?
Wow.
Not at all. I made no such association. Didn’t even mention anyone dying. That’s all you.
No, I’m suggesting there aren’t many because not every one can tolerate it long term. Those I’ve know who can, were raised that way from infancy. But it seems our bodies, once adapted to animal protein, make it quite difficult for us to stop. Not impossible, just difficult.
Do you have any evidence of any of that?
I lived most of my life eating meat with every meal, stopped eating meat suddenly and got used to it in what, maybe a month?
I think that you have it backwards, it’s not that you need to be raised vegetarian for it to be easy, it’s just that people are so brainwashed thinking that meat is life that they just can’t escape it without a conscious effort.
That’s great for you. Again I never said it was everyone. But a portion of people who try, sometimes a few years later, they find that they have low energy, muscle mass and strength loss. Especially athletes and extremely fit people. Sometimes women notice similar problems when pregnant, and they have to eat meat until they give birth, then give it up again.
Vegetarians and vegans frequently claim it’s always great for everyone, and the few drawbacks are just people not doing it right. But that isn’t always the case.
Yeah, you need to take into account nutrients and the amount of protein you have. But you also need that if you’re eating meat, earlier I was reading that like 5% americans have enough fibers, people simply don’t care about what they est and that’s the problem. But I’d take low energy as a warning sign, above cancer.
Nutrition is something that you need to think about. And yeah, people don’t do it right most of the time.
cough India cough
They still… Have meat in their diet? I’ve never understood this argument.
It reaks of bad faith and bullshit.
Yes they eat less meat. No they are not a magic wonderland of vegetarians.
Yeah, I think you need to look up Indians and their diets better. Some Indians eat meat, others are completely vegetarians, around 50%. I know they have religious rules against eating meat, any meat.
It’s really a Hindu, rather than a specifically Indian, thing. But India is majority Hindu, so.
Hinduism encourages vegetarianism, and it is considered more moral than eating meat since you aren’t killing an animal. However, only Brahmins are required to be vegetarian; other castes can eat non-cow meat if they like, though refraining from doing so is considered better. Since the Brahmins are the highest caste, vegetarianism is a conservative position in India, while the woke SJWs defend religious minorities’ traditions of eating meat.
But, as has been said, this all means that India has a higher than average proportion of vegetarians, and even the lower-caste vegetarians are no less healthy than foreigners of comparable social class.
There are also degrees of vegetarianism. A former housemate of mine is a vegetarian for religious reasons, but he didn’t mind eating a cupcake I’d made which he didn’t realise had egg in it.
One of my current housemates eats meat but his dad is a Brahmin, and said dad can’t even eat vegetarian food that was prepared in cookware which had meat in it at some point. To cater to the really strict Brahmins, there are “double vegetarian” restaurants, where all the food is meat-free and the staff are all vegetarians.
Indians recognise the word vegan because of English hegemony, but they don’t use it themselves. They refer to such people as “true vegetarians”; I think the Jains fall here.
What’s the life expectancy in India vs western countries? Remind me again lol
I rest my case
Isn’t that more a case of low income and low access to health care? Loads of countries in that income bracket that have similar life expectancy while eating meat.
Was this an actual attempt at discussion or drive by lol trolling?

You would make an excellent yehaaw scientist.
Yes. As I said in another comment, people raised without animal meet tend to do fine. Most others have a difficult time.
Are you suggesting eating meat since birth changes you physiologically or that Skill issue?
Physiologically. Mostly gut biome I imagine. But I’m not doctor, I don’t know specifically what it is. I just know a non zero number of p… It may be an economic issue, being ablke to afford the right food.
The gut bacteria thing might make sense, but a lot of people transition. They would then have the new biome. Extra farting and all.
I think it’s a culture issue, as in the culture teaching you what works and what does not, etc. in terms of eating habits and recipes. Maybe once a robust culture forms around eating vegetarian food where you live, then maybe all the doubts might go away.
I don’t know, it’s an educated guess. I know they aren’t richer in India, and they are doing fine.
They suffer malnutrition often. Unless they are extremely wealthy.
For the masses to be healthy we need meat. It’s the way it is.
Anything to back that claim up?
Source, my bank account?
We live longer if we eat meat and veggies look like shit lol. Skin and bones.
You’re a toddler my dude. But you’re also probably a troll who enjoys riling people up. So honestly, whatever…
