Those rounded Freedom Units equal identical Cubic Inches… They’re the same volume.
Using the Socialism Units, the PS2 is ~ 300 cubic centimeters larger (roughly the volume of a 6.7cm cube)
(I think the number of iterations of rounding that we’ve collectively performed here has somewhat skewed the results, but it’s pretty close at any rate)
Edit imndoing math in DDG search and it might be 186 cubic centimeters so 5.7cm tall cube, but that seems like a huge variation and now I’m questioning my ability to calculate volume. But it’s late on a Fri and my brain is fried.

This is why I’m starting to think APUs like the 8700G are probably the better choice at the moment. There isn’t a single AAA game from the past 6 years I’d want to play anyway and 1080p on a big screen already looks fine for me. The cost of a modern dedicated GPU is insane for what you’re getting nowadays anyway.

I think Sony wasn’t sure for a long time whether they wanted their consoles to stand out as consoles or blend in with other electronics like sound systems and VCRs. PSX looks like a console, PS2, PS3, and PS4 looked like electronics, PS5 looks like a console again.
I think they were trying to differentiate themselves from Nintendo, whose systems looked very much like toys (other than the Wii and Wii U (the system, not the controller)… And NES, actually, that one didn’t stand out as much as SNES, N64, or especially the GCN).
The PS2 stood out because at the time all your video devices were silver or grey coloured plastic. The ps3 stood out because it was almost completely curves.
Yeah, the pattern has been to alternate between curvy and angular. The PS6 will probably be entirely straight lines.
Iirc PS3 in particular was marketed as an all-in-one entertainment center, with the ability to play bluray and whatnot. By the time of PS4, that was probably already a non-concern, since most people were just using the web for everything through their computers and tvs.
Though a part of the reason why I got a ps5 was to have a blueray/dvd player since my ps3 was ageing.

I thought I’d be able to get a nice little form factor.
Then I saw the size of the video card, the huge cooler for the CPU, mobo and PS to support them, and,.well haha, here I am.
You can build an SFF (small form factor) PC no problem. It’s harder and more expensive due to the clearances and parts being more niche, but I would highly recommend it.
I have an RTX 3080 and Ryzen 5800x in mine, all under 16l in volume, without any compromises.

I stuffed a Ryzen 5700X3D and a Radeon 9070XT in an 11L Lian Li x Dan A4-H2O. It wasn’t easy to get all the cables and such routed correctly, but it fit. (Well, except that I did have to give up on having a 3.5" hard drive, but aside from that.)
Ironically, I had originally intended to keep using my old Antec ISK-600 (which was also a mini-ITX case, but larger – not sure how large, as it came out before they started measuring cases in liters). Unfortunately, as I had little time to research which particular 9070XT variant to get while standing in line on launch day, I accidentally picked the wrong one and it was >2 slots, so I had to change my case. Then because I found an open-box A4-H2O, that snowballed into swapping my ATX PSU for an SFX one, and my 120mm AIO for a 240mm AIO with slightly more flexible tubes because that’s how tightly packed it had to be.
In my experience 2.5" drives are much less prone to failure, so I’m not buying a 3.5" again, unless maybe super cheap just for torrents.

I haven’t gotten around to putting it together yet, but that’s what my ISK-600 is going to become. Believe it or not, that thing can hold 3 3.5" drives and two 2.5" drives (or a slim optical drive, but nobody uses those anymore).

Even the CPU package is mostly heat spreader.
I basically can’t upgrade from my 3080 without a full rebuild because my case only fits dual slot GPUs (plus a bit, but not much) and there’s nothing good from newer cards in that category.
At least, that used to be true, but I stopped looking after prices went above the number of limbs I have left…

Water cooling would bring the footprint down, but you might have to get creative with where you put the radiator.

Yeah I don’t think there is anywhere to put the radiator. Unless I also watercooled the CPU and shared the rad. The case isn’t that tiny (NZXT h100). You might be able to get a rad in at the front even with the CPU air-cooler in place, I dunno.
I checked if there was a 2-slot water-cooled 5080 and there isn’t - dunno if other cards offer anything, I’m just using that as a litmus test. I’m guessing most people in the market have a big tower, and maybe that’s what I’ll end up doing. The reason I got a small case originally was to take it on the train to LANs and now I have a car so it’s not a problem. BUT I do put it on my desk instead of under it, and a full-size tower wouldn’t fit.
I don’t know what the factory wc options are, but the aftermarket GPU AIOs all seem to be 1- or 2-slot.

Yeah, I’m with you. My current rig is parts I meticulously selected and then let sit on a table for 6 months until I gave up and took it to a local shop to be assembled.
Well, I can at least plug squarey cable into squarey hole… but it’s also something I grew up doing, and I never took off a GPU HSF before, and now I’m stuck in my ways and it’s spoopy…

Not sure how different it is for the PS2 (apart from Fat/Slim) but when buying an old PS1, the differences between 1000, 3000, 5000, 7000, and 9000 models can be quite a lot like the removed parallel port or a better laser.
Interesting. I’m a PC gamer myself, last PlayStation I had was the OG PS3. I suppose part of it is I like RTS games and keyboard and mouse when I’m playing shooters or just being able to tinker with my shit.
The older consoles are cool, before they just became computers.
Need a new form factor for the motherboard that separates the PCIe x(n) from the rest of the slots so if you want a wifi card or some other add-on you actually have room to put them in.
