I mean at least it is an instance doing the defederation and announcing it publicly (so people who don’t like this can leave). This also makes a great example for people who don’t understand the difference between banning lists in apps vs instances.
I’m willing to bet he’s an admin or mod on there 🤣
When I read the summary of the rant he made about “leaving” first thing I thought was “sure buddy”. There’s no way someone like that doesn’t have at least one alt, if only for testing development of their program.
Who knows how bad the infestation is of alts.
You’d think they’d keep a lower profile after breaking a federal law in the country they’re in.
hes kirk@startrek.website
Absolutely. The batshittery that’s happened there in the past is a smaller scale mirror of what’s going on now
The federation has fallen to the dominion, changelings are sabotaging it from the inside.
Love it 🙄 Just deleted my account there, fuck those assholes.
Make you worse, you you wish death and they don’t wish it they do it.
Gonna need some clarification on that sentence.
They dropped the s off “makes you worse”
Yeah I failed a sarcasm… I wanted to show that wishing harm is seen as bladder than killing people
bladder
Oh piss off
;-}
explicitly allows discussions about hurting people
Remember kids, wishing death upon mass murderers makes you just as bad as them actually.
Remember adults two wrongs don’t make a right
Memes aren’t facts.
I don’t know the exact scenario being referenced above, but personally I don’t believe in the death penalty for anything. I truly believe people can change and be reformed. Not that everyone will, but everyone can be. Death robs of any opportunity or hope.
I also understand there is a lot of nuance around this conversation. I don’t judge anyone for believing differently, as long as its for good reasons.
Someone should tell Star Treks “section 31” then :-)
There are dozens of us, but we all have a least 5 alts. EDIT:There, not they…

I made a single comment asking how someone can be anti-trans and a fascist boot licker but also a star trek fan.
Guess who I asked.
Thanks for asking. I have the same questions!
So you called them names and they kicked you to the curb? Shocking development
An old .world account that got turned on after Patrick had his shitfit, and defends Patrick. Hmmm…
How many differently named alts is it normal to have? I could accept like, one or two for safety reasons (never want to connect too much info about yourself). But the known ones (Admiral Patrick, ptz, Kirk) plus all the others who feel suspiciously strongly in favor of him despite being almost entirely inactive is for sure suspicious. Like… whatcha stockpiling all those for, man??
I think by the time you hit 5 you need a long hard look in the mirror. 1 for NSFW stuff you don’t want to associate with your main is normal, 1-2 for breaking up information or other stuff. Then 1 more because I’m sure there are other reasons. But 5? What are you even doing at 5?
If you’re doing app development you tend to aquire accounts - straightforward things like testing interactions between users in different conditions means you quickly wind up with a spare heap of them. It’s why pretty much every open-source crashout like this has the same period of rooting out alt accounts and “randos” coming to defend a dev “they” like after being inactive for years.
weird amount of those lately…
He just can’t help himself! No matter how many times he says he’s quitting the platform, he’s back before you know it. It’s hilarious how transparent and obvious his alts are.
It’s one thing to have an alt, (I do, and I intentionally block my account and all politics/negative things to keep space, it’s more for looking at memes and making them), its another to pretend it’s not you and defend yourself.
The way he uses these alts is very Reddit-like, keeping them dormant until it is time to wake them up to sockpuppet. He has to invent false users to side with him because he’s utterly alone otherwise and he can’t handle it. Nobody else sees him for the last bastion of Lemmy sanctity and purity that he thinks he is.
It’s not name calling when it’s what they do.
I don’t understand how Patrick hiding a DDOS attack in his “goodbye” message isn’t grounds for banning his alts on that server according to their policy. It literally is breaking the law in many countries
Edit: for that matter, .world should consider the same for his alts there
Lemmy.world isn’t going to take action against his account. They already don’t take actions against the no-content sockpuppet accounts and extremist trolls who use their instance. They should take action against them, they likely won’t though.
I just think it’s hilarious that instead of “saving” the fediverse they fractured it. Whiney bitches love to break shit then whine about it being broken.
I would say they’ve brought the fediverse together like never before. I don’t think this many people have agreed on a single thing in the history of fedi.
Hell, it’s the first time I’ve seen everyone open to reasonable discussions of ideas like his in a long time. By setting up a boundary that everyone vocally agrees is unacceptable suddenly there’s a sense of trust that people aren’t all rushing towards it.
It’s true, we usually spend most of our time hating eachother for not being the right kind of leftist. This has been a united front as far as I’ve seen.
Agreed.
It showed the broad spirit of the users, and that the fundamental nature of the federation design model… works literally exactly as it was intended to.
Sure, you can be the petty tyrant of your own fiefdom.
But no one rules everything, and anyone, at a comparatively low actual cost of entry, can make their own fiefdom, if they want to.
Maybe we should all be thanking nutomic and Dessalines, regardless of any specific disagreements any of us may have with them, for doing the fundamental conceptual and coding work.
Lemmy’s origin story:
Or, frankly, because of the disagreements. Whatever bullshit you can say they pulled, at least it wasn’t, yknow, this.
Absolutely, well said.
I would definitely agree. Despite our differences, we all have one thing in common. We don’t like being deceived by those who build the frontends we use. We trust our credentials to these people and trust they aren’t going to screw us over. He violated that trust and people are right to be pissed about it.
Can’t have your little kingdom when it’s not fractured from the whole.
How many do you think he’s got? I swear I just found one called Eristalis created a day ago lol
James R Kirk - he was posting like an impartial observer on Fediverse vs Disinformation @db0 in a breakdown of the ban list thread. Things like:
The dev posted a response in c/Tesseract but you’re mostly correct. They wanted to make it easier for like minded future admins to be able to spin up a Lemmy instance without having to know all of the lore.
Then when people called him out he started becoming a frothing troll.
looks like cardboardcruncher6400 is another, He’s basically manifestoing all over the shitpost thread
I’m losing count of his sock puppets at this point
there’s another one asking “reasonable” questions and claiming noscript blocks db0 (and intimating it’s therefore suss)
Pretty sure the dude saying how everyone who blew up over the shitlist was doing illegal shit is one too
Doing illegal shit is a requirement for being a human rights activist in the USA today.
always has been
This whole situation is bizzare
what ddos attack? link?
That was my first instance. Turns out it’s the star trek has gotten too woke kind of people running it?! Ah well, llap 🖖

I had forgotten the reason the .website was first formed, and then some of the posters returned to .world later. I wonder if there is anyone out there documenting all the different lore bits.
Well, I’m the one who caused the exodus from Startrek.website so… if you’ve got any questions, just ask.
The tl;dr was thus:
ST.W was made in response to redditors leaving reddit. It was created, and is run, by the same moderators who created and ran /r/StarTrek. Those moderators have a metric ton of drama surrounding them on reddit to the point that Star Trek fragmented into a hundred different subreddits to avoid being associated with what everyone was considering toxic moderation. Even toxic by reddit standards.
So when startrek.website started, the same behavior did too. Curtailing opinions is a big one. ValueSubtracted@Startrek.website, one of the admins, literally cannot help himself. He’s a diehard defender of the newer treks, much like I am, but he takes any slight against the show as an active insult. Where I will only remove things that are categorically false or dogwhistle-type homophobia/racism, he will remove anything that is negative about the newer shows. He will tell you to stay on topic or be positive and refuses any negative coverage.
I first joined startrek.website as Stamets (although I was on lemmy before that) and started posting. Things were going well until I started seeing posts removed from their Star Trek meme community for nonsense reasons. I asked the admins what was up and they handwaved away the abuse from the moderator of that community (USS Burrito Truck) and their own abuse. So I left startrek.website and set up TenForward on lemmy.world (something I’ve left for Risa@lemmy.dbzero.com although I’ve been very inactive for the past month due to life). I sent messages to the other big posters who were active, friends of mine by that point, asking if they’d want to join me on TenForward. They said yes. By this point, nothing was really posted publicly by me save for a comment or two around the time I left. Those comments were removed/deleted.
The first couple weeks went by smoothly for the comm but not for me. ValueSubtracted started reaching out to several admins of different instances, asking them all to ban me from their instances. Those admins all reported it to me like “What is his problem?” and denied him. So I made a post on Mastodon saying that people should consider staying away from startrek.website due to some odd admin decisions. Within 24 hours I had gotten an email from my mastodon instance saying that there was a report against that post and I needed to clarify it with my admin. I gave her the information and she said the report had no merit and dismissed it. But it was clear who made the report.
We then started getting reports on TenForward for every tiny comment and every tiny post, accusing the community of causing cross instance harassment that was directed towards them. Most of these comments were passively talking about what was going on. There was no hate or harassment but the reports were coming from ValueSubtracted and were overloading the report section. Like maxing out the character count.
I asked him politely to stop several times and he kept doubling down and refusing to stop. It was at that point, realizing he wouldn’t stop until he was forced to, that I made a giant post about it. Included all the screenshots of the private messages he sent me, the reports, the insane shit, everything. Proving conclusively that the level of harassment they had risen to was going across multiple websites.
That post was lost when I deleted my lemmy.world account. Or so I thought. Someone sent me the internet archive page for it yesterday. So if you’re curious yourself…
I’m struck by incompetent of moderators they must be to think these attacks would work
It’s pathetic. They tried the same thing again a few months ago when I made another post updating their sketchy behavior. They’re so predictable that I used the phrase ‘scorched earth’, quoting VS as probably saying thats what he was going to do. Little did I know until after was that he did use that phrase. When I quoted him for it, he lost his fucking mind and had a meltdown in the matrix channel before leaving in a huff.
I think they actually use star trek as a cover to find leftist and trans people to add the to their list
Yeah, my opinion of leave other people the fuck alone was too extreme, got me on the list, which i found hilarious.
Report to your nearest Starfleet officer if you’re aware of anyone queer or has communist sympathies, Admiral Patrick McCarthy needs your support to Make Lemmy Reddit Again

I mean, does it really count as separate drama or a continuation of existing drama?

Continuation for sure.
The whole “you violated our policy but we can’t tell you how you violated it” thing has heavy big-tech gaslighting vibes.
It even has the “here is a link to the entirety of our policy” trope. Like com’on, bruh, this is actually making me angry just reading it regardless of context.
I loathe that sort of shit.Smells like Reddit
That’s because they were the star trek mods from reddit pre-apicalypse. Not having duplicate communities in Reddit and all power concentrated into one mod group or even worse one person is what attracted me to Lemmy in the first place. Not all, but from what I’ve seen, former mods from Reddit tend to have the entitlement of my community should be the only community.
What an asshole

tbf the prime directive clearly states ‘open source devs have the right to embed obfuscated arbitary blocklists in their software without notyifying users, and DDOS anyone who points it out’
I want to let you know, this is my current favorite comment 🤘
🖖
So when do instances start defederating startrek.website since they clearly want to be alone?
lemy.lol has announced to defederate 30 minutes ago and is currently defederated.
And much respect to them for how they handled this/themselves.
Punishing the victims? really?
Who are the victims in this exactly? Aren’t we being a little loose on the definition?
The victims of an illegal computer attack, you dingus. Are you unaware that Admiral Patrick set up his instance to DDOS db0?
EDIT: This user is an alt of Admiral Patrick, so he’s playing dumb.
