Not recent, but I spent the majority of my teenage years dealing with awfully frizzy and unmanageable hair because I was shampooing daily (also using an excessive amount). I was under the impression that you need to thoroughly shampoo all oils away every time you shower in order to be “clean.” When I moved to university and no longer had parents around to tell me that I stink, my hygiene standards became more… relaxed, but I was surprised that my hair was a lot healthier!

I started looking up basic stuff after I saw a video of that guy who would shit in his hand in the bathroom and thought that was normal.

Turns out I was brushing my teeth backwards, you’re supposed to use mouthwash, then floss, then brush, and don’t spit.

Are you talking about not spitting mouthwash or toothpaste? Either way, you absolutely are supposed to spit. Every toothpaste I’ve ever used has directions not to swallow it.

Opening cereal/fruit/granola bars and similar foil wrappers. I would tear them on the serrated part and then only a sliver of the wrapper would come off and I’d have to try to widen the resulting hole in order to extract the bar, often crumbling part of it in the process. However, quite by accident I discovered that if I instead ignore the serration and tear against that foldy seam part that runs down the entire bar, then it separates right down the middle like magic and I can easily remove the bar. Often works on 8/16oz cheese too.

Another kitchen one. I always assumed the strongest water flow was closest to the faucet, but actually the water just about to hit the sink works better. This discovery has been useful for rinsing out things like cake icing tips and tea infusers.

Not too long ago I learned that you’re not supposed to rinse your mouth out after brushing your teeth, but instead just spit out the toothpaste. Apparently you’re supposed to leave a coating of it on your teeth for it to work properly.

As a kid I learned from the dentist that you should massage your gums with the toothbrush. I’ve recently learned that you should absolutely not and this is why I have retracted gums and exposed roots that hurt like a motherfucker.

Childhood dentist that is probably long dead, I wish you bad thoughts wherever you are.

Where did you learn this? I’ve never heard this recommendation before and it sounds pretty out there.

Edit: it turns out that apparently both the American Dental Association and the National Health Service of the UK recommend not rinsing immediately after brushing. Huh, TIL.

The flouride in toothpaste doesn’t work if you rinse it off immediately. You should not eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after brushing.

It makes sense if you think about it. The flouride needs to rest on your teeth to harden them properly.

My dental hygienist recently said that if you vomit you’re not supposed to brush your teeth right away. You’re supposed to rinse your mouth out with water to balance the pH levels and after a little while then you can brush.

Yep, same with drinks especially acidic stuff! I was told NOT to brush straight after juice, soda, etc. because it actually screws up your enamel. Bit late, my enamel is fkd but yeah my dentist said to wait an hour after drinking and eating. And then not to have anything including water for half an hour after brushing! They say to leave a coating of toothpaste on my teeth for as long as possible after brushing. I hate it honestly lol, I always want water 😭

Growing up I was definitely told the opposite lol especially with vomiting and with soft drink (soda, coke etc)!

Toothpaste instructions often tell you to rinse with a small amount of water, but dentists here always say not to.

And floss before brushing, so you can rinse goop out before the toothpaste goes in.

My dentist has also said the order doesn’t matter. My guess is that the benefits of flossing at all outweigh any small benefits from doing it in a specific order. I’m also assuming most dentists are just happy if you floss and don’t want to nitpick on technique unless it’s causing issues.

it’s more about practicalilty. when in flossing, stuff might get loosened but still be partially stuck in my wire, or just stick to be back of my teeth

if I floss first, I can just go straight to brushing and not have to get that little piece unstuck separately

this really helps to optimize my time efficiency in my life, allowing me precious more seconds to doomscroll

Are you imagining that toothpaste and municipal water supplies contain hydrofluoric acid? That’s like saying hydrogen peroxide, H2O2, contains water, H2O.

And what the hell is fluoride jelly and why do you need it?

The fluoride concentration in toothpaste is not high enough to cause toxicity if not rinsed out. Don’t eat mouthfuls of it, but the small amount left after brushing is beneficial for enamel. Ask literally any qualified dentist. Literally a couple weeks back, my dentist suggested that I can put a little dab on a tender spot of my tooth after brushing before going to sleep to target it.

      this is nonsense.

you’re not suppose to eat/drink after brushing, esp anything acidic.

because you want the fluoride in the toothpaste to stay on your teeth. and it’s like 10-15m.

you are suppose to rinse your mouth. just like you rinse the flouride treatment at the dentist.

I don’t know about “wrong”, but I recently found out people think it’s weird that I attempt all the across clues in a crossword in order, and then all the down clues? Evidently most people jump around and make use of the extra letters they’ve been getting?

It never even occurred to me to not just do all the clues in order. 😬

For years I kept dating and being in relationships and putting a lot of effort into it. Also socializing and making friends too.

I gave up about 5 years ago and I’m much much happier with my life. It’s amazing how much better I feel on a daily basis when my energy and efforts aren’t going into a black hole from which no joy comes out. I also rapidly achieved a lot of life goals after 10+ years of achieving almost none of them.

Being mostly totally alone is completely awesome and I’m annoyed that other people convinced me it was terrible and awful.

I’m actually moving in the opposite direction. I was (still am really) a massive introvert, then I got really, really, really sick and realized I have zero support if something happens where I can’t take care of myself. I realized at the end of the day humans are a social species and we need some level of human connection to thrive.

I’m somewhere in the middle. Big introvert (actually I’m autistic) and I really isolated after a bad friendship broke down years ago, not the first time. I just didn’t want to put myself back out there and keep getting hurt. I was also sick of the thing people say like “let’s hang out sometime” and then nothing ever happens. It’s just a polite saying apparently? So I stopped taking those statements as any interest in a friendship.

Relatively recently, a coworker said the whole we should hang out thing and I was sigh this again. We got along so well at work but I didn’t trust that let’s hang out sometime crap. Until one day she actually pulled her diary out and was like when are you free. Anyway now we’re actually friends and hang out quite a bit!

It’s the kind of person you let in I think. I was taken advantage of so many times and in toxic friendships I assumed that’s just what friendships were. They don’t have to be. You just have to know when to let those relationships go and how to recognize the friendships that are actually fulfilling!

Speak for yourself. When I’ve been sick my gf/family told me to go f myself and what an asshole I am for getting sick. Literally nobody is ever going to take care of me, and never has. When my dad was dying, my 5 year old girlfriend didn’t help, she broke up with me for ‘being a loser who is sad about his stupid dad’. Oh and then called me up asking me for money after we broke up. Most of my gfs/friends actively tried to sabotage the progress in my life and would argue against me doing the things that improved my life. Working out, not drinking, eating right, saving, investing, were all labeled ‘gay, stupid, weird, queer’.

At the end of my days, people add very little to my life, and having them in my life results in a net negative. Which is precisely why excluding them in my life has lead to massive gains in my health, happiness, and wealth. I can work out, eat right, and pursue my passions and grow my career skills without repeatedly being told how awful and shitty doing those things are, and what I should be doing with my life is sitting on my ass drinking booze, eating fast food, and watching shitty sitcoms every night.

You can lecture me all you want, but I’ve never had anyone in my life really add anything of value or given me any genuine support and the second I ask for help they tell me what a piece of shit I am and then start asking me for help. Anytime I called anyone up to try and share good news, like getting a $35,000 raise, buying a home, or adopting my pets, I was told how shitty I was and then asked for money by so called ‘friend’ or family member or other person who supposedly ‘cares’ about me and lecturing me what an asshole I am because they ‘deserve’ my money more than I do and I shouldn’t be able to have a home, or pets, or a car, or a great job.

Which is to say, without all that horrid negatively dragging me down from my supposed ‘support structure’ I am finally able to be happy and enjoy my life without being shamed, harassed, or threatened. I’m also allowed to be proud of my achievements in life, rather than being repeatedly told how horrible and undeserving I am for having achieved them.

Those are some shitty friends and family.

I’m glad that you were able to achieve so much for yourself by focusing on yourself, many people never get to learn that lesson. Never forget that.

When you heal everything your formers have done to you, then you get to learn to find people that don’t want to drag you down. It’s hard; when we grow damaged and broken, we become a lighthouse for people looking for someone to take advantage. However, it’s possible to change the lightbulb, we just have to heal first.

No. I don’t need to heal. I’m healed.

I know I’m healed because instead of listening to people lecture me how damaged I am, I ignore them. Because that is what everyone in my life used to do, lecture me how damaged I am for not being like them and how ‘concerned’ they are for me. It’s manipulation to setup a power dynamic where they are ‘normal’ and you are ‘faulty’ so later on they can convince you to do what they want.

Just like the lady last winter I tried to date who lectured me I am mentally ill and need therapy if I am happy driving a basic car, because a ‘well-adjusted person has ambition and self respect and would want to drive a $100,000 car.’ She drove a $70K car. She genuinely thought I was mentally ill. I genuinely thought she was a stupid idiot and I lost all respect/desire for her when she voiced her ‘concern’ for me.

I’d love to meet someone someday who thinks it’s OK to be happy with driving a basic car, but I have literally never met such a person in my life. They might exist out there somewhere but I have never met them. Most folks I meet, sadly, just want to lecture me on how I need to have a more expensive one or how ‘disappointed’ they in me for driving such a ‘cheap car’ and how I have ‘no self respect’ if I do so. They also tell me how I have ‘no self respect’ because I don’t own $5,000 suit and shit like that.

            Weird how that works.

Nobody told me you were supposed to scrape/scrub your tongue when brushing your teeth… and nobody told me about washcloths either. 🫣 My wife put me on to that about a decade ago (so, in my early twenties) so by now it’s just part of my life but yeah…

It changes things! Sometimes the mouth area is still a bit funky and it’s not the teeth you’ve just brushed but the unclean tongue that’s the issue.

If I brush my teeth then I’m brushing my tongue and the roof of my mouth too. A few times a year I’ll use a tongue scraper but it’s probably too much.

Walking in general. Physical therapy both sucks super hard and is vastly improving my life. I’ve had a decades long back injury caused by a dog attack, but I’ve apparently been walking in a way that guards a wound not entirely there.

    Thank you PT.

    FUCK you PT.

Oh god yes, this. I hate it so much. I’m so glad I’ve gone. Gotta go back as soon as I can afford to get some help with upper back tightness. Fuck the list of 8 new exercises I’m going to get, hate, and find magically fix my prooblem.

In the meantime between getting back to physio, try a cheap TENS unit. I found a lot of relief by slowly over the course of a few days applying 30 mins of electroshock to my lower back when it acts up. When I was going to physio, besides the exercises they gave I would get 20 mins of TENS therapy. I figured I could save time and money by just doing the shocking myself as well as my morning stretches.

I learned that you should roll up a period pad and use the wrapper of the new pad to hold it rolled closed. They have a little tape and it reduces mess and smell.

In my defense, I didn’t use pads until last year.

going from pads / tampons to the silicone cup was my learning a better way. First week was rough but by the end of the week and thereafter I couldn’t even feel it once it was in. Went to fuck a few times and the dude was like TF is this? And I’d be like oh shit lemme swap it for a disc real quick.

Cleaning cast iron. I used to add water cold and bring to a boil. Now I heat first until grease is almost smoking, then add a bit of water and let it steam and sputter itself clean.

Just use soap and water like normal. You just need to thoroughly dry it afterward and if possible, apply a small amount of oil while it’s got to keep building the seasoning.

The seasoning is polymerized oil and does not come off with soap. You need a lot of abbrassive action to remove the seasoning.

🫤 I just wash it out like anything else and put it upside down on the stove to dry.

Depends on how stuck things get. I do a lot of blackening of meat which tends to leave dry cooked bits on the pan which don’t wash out so easy.

When I say “blackening”, I mean with my black spice in light oil. How are you doing it?

Nothing that fancy. Just getting a good char. But the pan dries out everywhere not touching meat, so bits get caked on a bit.

I have one of those too, but I usually don’t need it with the heat and steam method. Most of the stuck-on foodstuff comes off with just a spray from the faucet. No need to even scrub.

I have a solid plastic scraper that has never let me down. Doesn’t matter what I cook in it, how much blackened meat gets stuck, or how long I neglect it in the stove top before washing it, I run it under hot water, hit it with the scraper, then the abrasive side of my sponge, then the soft side. After, I towel dry it, put it in the stove top to evaporate left over moisture, then rub a thin layer of oil on it.
